How our workshops work:

finding your inner animal

The purpose of our workshops is to approximate the umwelt of a particular animal. The umwelt is the perspective or understanding of the world from the individual animal’s point of view.  Already by crawling around in the moss and over the roots of a tree, for example, we feel closer to the world of the squirrel than if we are walking around on a nicely constructed path.   In order to get closer to an ecosystem we have to engage all our senses; we have to feel it on our skin.   When Dr. Yellow-Fish leads a Sea Turtle Workshop for example, participants experience the long and perilous journey sea turtle hatchlings make from their nest on the sandy beach down to the ocean.  When we imitate an animal, we begin to understand the animal’s journey and appreciate why it is special.  This understanding helps us develop a deeper empathic understanding of animals in their struggle to survive, especially in the face of man made adversity.
