Meet Zsa Zsa!

My name is Zsa Zsa and I am a love the plains zebra. I was born in Tanzania to a huge family, with 6 siblings - which is where some zebras are from! The zebras from where I grew up belong to the Zany harem, a subgroup of a larger herd. My mom says my dad is the main stallion and he has ten wives (not strange at all, though it may account for all my brothers and sisters - what a progressive family dynamic, amirite?). In my free time when I am not watching zebras battle cheetahs, hyenas, and other beasts, I enjoy drinking at the lake and playfighting with my siblings as we watch zebras do the same!

Fun fact about zebras: there are actually three kinds! Aside from plains zebras, there are also Grevy’s zebras and mountain zebras. Sadly, herds have been shrinking in the last few years because of spreading farmland and poachers. Even though the Zany harem are near threatened for extinction, their situation is less dire compared to the Grevy’s, who are extremely endangered due to poaching for their hides. See more at the African Wildlife Foundation.

More about zebras

Recent discoveries have found that their stripes exist for a reason! Stripes actually discourage biting flies from landing on them. I gotta get me some stripes! See here.

If you have ever wondered why people don’t ride zebras as they do horses, see here.
